Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
  • Disconnect the battery cables and connections. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Disconnect the air/fuel supply to the air starter, if equipped. Use Procedure 012-022 in Section 12 of the corresponding service manual of the engine being serviced.
  • Remove the ignition control module. Refer to Procedure 019-105 in Section 19.

Remove

Remove the capscrews, lock washers, spacers, grounding wire ring terminal, and ignition control module bracket from the cam follower cover.

Note the location of the grounding wire ring terminal (1).

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

 WARNING 

Wear appropriate eye and face protection when using compressed air. Flying debris and dirt can cause personal injury.

Clean the ignition control module bracket.

Dry with compressed air.

Inspect the bracket around the grounding wire terminal (1) and bottom two ignition control module mounting holes (2). These areas must be bare metal and free from paint, debris, and corrosion.

Inspect the ignition control module bracket for cracks and other damage.

Replace the bracket if damage is found.

Install

Install the spacers, ignition control module bracket, lock washers, ground wire ring terminal, and capscrews.

Tighten the capscrews.

Torque Value:  25  n.m  [221 in-lb]

The grounding wire ring terminal (1) must be mounted to a location that is bare metal and free from paint, debris, and corrosion. This is required for proper grounding of the ignition control module.

Finishing Steps

  • Install the ignition control module. Refer to Procedure 019-105 in Section 19.
  • Connect the air/fuel supply to the air starter if, equipped. Use Procedure 012-022 in Section 12 of the corresponding service manual of the engine being serviced.
  • Connect the battery cables and connections. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Operate the engine and check for proper operation.
